Avesi Kalokalo, the direct care supervisor at Adult & Teen Challenge in Fiji, shares his poignant experiences working with drug addicts. He describes the emotional journey he witnesses as individuals confront their struggles, expressing that while it’s sometimes heartbreaking to see them break down, it is often heartwarming. “When I see hardened men from troubled backgrounds become emotional and cry, it brings me great satisfaction,” he remarked, emphasizing the positive impact of their rehabilitation efforts.

Reverend Hemraj Mangal, the executive director of the center, reported that 21 individuals have successfully completed their recovery programs since July of the previous year. He noted that the desire to change among the recovering addicts plays a crucial role in their journey. “The biggest obstacle is whether the person truly wants to change. When they are genuinely fed up with their past, it significantly aids their recovery process,” Mr. Mangal explained.

The center’s focus on fostering genuine consent to change among its clients has proven effective, as those who enter the program with a sincere wish to turn their lives around tend to navigate the recovery pathway more smoothly.

This touching narrative highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the power of support in overcoming addiction. The ongoing success of the program serves as a beacon of hope that positive transformation is possible, reinforcing the belief that with the right support and personal motivation, individuals can build better futures for themselves.

In summary, the work being done by Adult & Teen Challenge creates a transformative environment where individuals battling addiction can reclaim their lives, demonstrating the positive possibilities that arise from understanding, empathy, and support in recovery efforts.
