The Child Wellbeing Centre is currently aiding 25 boys, as highlighted by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children, and Social Protection. This initiative is a collaboration with Inspire Pacific, a non-governmental organization that has initiated a rehabilitation program in Namosi to assist boys in moving away from street life.
Ms. Tabuya outlined the goals of this pilot program, emphasizing the importance of changing the boys’ mindsets through counseling and promoting healthier social environments. She stated, “We focus on counseling while helping them to find a healthier circle of friends, moving away from their previous associations.”
The program also offers vocational training opportunities, including farming, allowing these boys to acquire new skills. A crucial element of the center’s mission is reintegration back into their families, which Ms. Tabuya considers vital for their recovery and development.
Additionally, the program addresses substance abuse issues in collaboration with St. Giles Hospital and the Stress Management Board at CWM Hospital. There is recognition of the urgent need for a dedicated Child Drug Rehabilitation Centre, focusing on clinical detoxification before the boys enter the rehabilitation program.
Proposals are being sought from international drug rehabilitation centers to bolster this initiative, which will subsequently be presented to the Cabinet following discussions with the Ministry of Health and potential donors.
Ms. Tabuya acknowledged the ongoing drug crisis in the community, noting that police are making daily arrests related to drug offenses. She stressed that substance use is an unhealthy coping mechanism for stress and urged parents and guardians to seek healthier alternatives.
This initiative highlights a proactive approach to supporting vulnerable youth and tackling pressing social issues. With the right resources and commitment, this program has the potential to effect significant positive change in the lives of these boys and their communities.
In summary, the Child Wellbeing Centre is taking vital steps to provide support, counseling, and vocational training to boys in need, while addressing broader concerns about substance abuse and community reintegration. The focus on healthier social connections and family reintegration reinforces the hope for a brighter future for these young individuals.
