An agreement has been established between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, with the goal of enhancing the livelihoods and overall well-being of Fiji’s rural and maritime populations. Signed recently, this ‘Implementing Partner Agreement’ will tackle several critical challenges faced by these communities, including access to healthcare, combating gender-based violence, family planning, economic opportunities, and empowering youth and women, as well as improving disaster response efforts.
Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management Isoa Talemaibua, highlighted that UNFPA has rolled out various programs tailored to meet the specific needs of these communities in recent years. He praised the UN agency for the support it has provided to Fiji’s Northern Division since 2020. Talemaibua pointed out that many rural and maritime areas experience significant challenges due to geographic isolation, limited access to essential services, and socioeconomic hardships. This situation is particularly challenging for vulnerable groups such as women, youths, and marginalized communities.
UNFPA’s mission is to address these disparities to ensure that no individual, regardless of their location or the obstacles they encounter, is left behind. The Ministry’s responsibilities include implementing development initiatives that guarantee rural areas provide the same level of access to essential services and economic opportunities as the rest of the country.
One of the Ministry’s strategic priorities focuses on improving living standards and stimulating the rural economy to cultivate productive, progressive, safe, and resilient communities in Fiji. This partnership represents a positive step towards overcoming the challenges these communities face and fostering a more equitable society.
In summary, this agreement is a promising development for Fiji, offering hope for greater access to essential services and opportunities for its rural and maritime residents, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met in the broader social framework.
