Transforming Lives: How One Man Revolutionized Fiji’s Sugarcane Industry

Sanjay Murti has undergone a remarkable transformation, not just in his own life, but also in the lives of numerous sugarcane farmers in Fiji by becoming a tractor service provider (TSP). His journey began after completing Form 4 when he started working as a cane harvester before advancing to the position of manager at Batiri Citrus Farm under Food Process.

Identifying a significant gap in the sugarcane sector, Mr. Murti saw an opportunity for growth when the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) introduced a new initiative. In 2022, with the backing of the FSC and the Ministry of Agriculture, he took the courageous step of becoming a TSP. He noticed a shortage of tractors, which was hindering farmers’ ability to prepare their land effectively.

“Many growers couldn’t afford to pay up front, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without needing immediate cash payments,” Mr. Murti explained. This innovation proved to be mutually beneficial for him and the farmers in need of machinery.

Beginning with a single tractor, Mr. Murti has successfully expanded his operation to a fleet of six tractors, along with essential implements including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers. His commitment to providing reliable service has garnered attention from farmers throughout the region.

Although building a business is challenging, Mr. Murti’s perseverance, coupled with the support from FSC officials, has led to significant growth. Additionally, he has resumed cane farming and, after several years away from the fields, cultivated 7.5 acres of sugarcane this year with plans to increase to 30 acres.

His ambition does not stop there; Mr. Murti aims to become a major provider in the industry, intending to acquire a digger and various mechanical implements to broaden the services he offers farmers. His goal is to assist those who previously struggled to access agricultural machinery.

Despite his achievements, Mr. Murti acknowledges there is more to accomplish. “I’ve come a long way, but I’m not done yet. My goal is to help more farmers and make their work easier by offering a wider range of services,” he stated, expressing his belief in the continued potential of sugarcane farming.

Mr. Murti hopes that his success story serves as a source of inspiration for others in the agricultural community. His journey illustrates the impact that hard work, sound financial decisions, and community backing can have. The 47-year-old encourages fellow farmers to seize opportunities that arise, emphasizing that with effort, there is always a path forward.

This inspiring tale of resilience and innovation not only highlights individual success but also underscores the collective upliftment possible in the agricultural sector.
