Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced that the government is taking steps to formalize the settlements of Tore and Field 4 in Lautoka, providing much-needed stability for residents. During a visit to Lovu Hart Homes in Lautoka, Nalumisa informed locals that the government is working towards issuing formal leases to current residents of these areas, aiming to improve living conditions.
Nalumisa emphasized the importance of enhancing infrastructure, stating, “We are improving these areas so that they get better roads and other basic services like water, drainage, and electricity.” The initiative to formalize these settlements is part of a broader effort led by the Housing Department, which aims to ensure the provision of essential amenities for residents.
Additionally, Nalumisa addressed ongoing drainage issues in the Lovu area, assuring residents that these problems will be resolved. His visit also included a tour of the Keiyasi New Town development in Sigatoka, where he urged contractors to meet construction deadlines. This project will include the establishment of 27 commercial lots, four industrial lots, and various civic sites, ensuring a comprehensive strategy for community development.
This move aligns with the government’s larger commitment to improve informal settlements across Fiji, as highlighted in recent discussions around housing issues. With a reported 250 informal settlements housing a significant portion of the population, formalization and infrastructure improvements are essential. The government plans to allocate an estimated $30 million for enhancing these settlements, as previously mentioned by Nalumisa.
The collective effort ongoing in improving infrastructure reflects a hopeful outlook for residents in these areas. By addressing the roots of housing instability, the government aims to pave the way for secure, dignified living conditions for all Fijians.
