Transforming Fiji: Urban Migration and Tourism Development Goals

Half of Fiji’s total population now lives in urban areas, a fact emphasized by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the inauguration of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu on Friday.

Rabuka acknowledged the significant shift towards urban migration, noting that it is a widespread issue globally. He expressed the need for proactive measures to address this challenge and emphasized the importance of supporting people regardless of their location or choices.

The Prime Minister articulated that the aim of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program is to foster development in the communities where people reside. He pointed out that Fiji has a youthful demographic, with approximately half of its citizens under 30 years old. In the Northern Division, 63 percent of the population is within the productive age bracket of 15 to 64 years.

Rabuka highlighted that these demographics present a remarkable opportunity to leverage the country’s rich natural resources and workforce for economic growth and development. He outlined a vision for a more prosperous and resilient Fiji at the core of this initiative.

The government is dedicated to transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub that promotes economic advancement, generates meaningful job opportunities, and attracts local and international investments. Rabuka confirmed that the government is committed to a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the economy and ensuring a better future for the people of Fiji.
