Education Transformation in the Pacific: What to Expect at CPEM 2025?

Transforming Education for Tomorrow: What’s Next for Pacific Youth?

Significant advancements are on the horizon for the Pacific Regional Education Framework (PacREF) as preparations commence for the upcoming Conference of Pacific Education Ministers (CPEM), scheduled for March 18-20, 2025, in Papua New Guinea. This conference aims to refine educational strategies tailored to enhance the prospects of Pacific youth, under the theme “Transforming Edukesen for a better Pacific.” This initiative mirrors global efforts to adapt education systems to meet the evolving needs and aspirations of young people in the region.

The inaugural CPEM held in Auckland in 2023 laid the groundwork for vital commitments under the PacREF. Education ministers emphasized the importance of incorporating indigenous knowledge, languages, and culture into educational curricula, improving teacher quality, prioritizing early childhood education, and ensuring the integrity and accessibility of educational data. A key highlight of these commitments is the focus on inclusivity, ensuring that all learners, particularly those facing challenges, have access to quality education.

The Pacific has made progress through various initiatives aimed at enhancing educational outcomes. A notable example is the increasing support for technical vocational education and training (TVET), which is critical for meeting the skill development needs of students. In Tokelau, a partnership with the New Zealand Institute of Technology has significantly boosted student enrollment in vocational programs, showcasing a positive trajectory toward fulfilling learners’ aspirations.

In addition, the incorporation of indigenous knowledge and non-cognitive skills into school curricula remains a foundational goal of the PacREF. These educational strategies are pivotal in preserving cultural identity while equipping students to thrive in an increasingly technological world. The ongoing endeavors not only aim to elevate educational standards but also to cultivate a strong sense of community and belonging among Pacific youth.

As the region transitions into Phase 2 of the PacREF, with a heightened focus on climate change, the outcomes of the forthcoming CPEM in 2025 will be closely monitored. This phase aims to enhance educational frameworks, fostering resilience and adaptability in the face of environmental and socioeconomic challenges.

The positive responses to the urgent need for educational transformation highlight a collective commitment to nurturing holistic development and community values among Pacific youth. The aspirations articulated through the PacREF pave a hopeful path towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, setting the stage for a brighter future for the next generation of the Pacific Islands.
