The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has unveiled a proposal to transform the Rakiraki Temporary Corrections Centre into a permanent Rehabilitation Centre. This plan aims to boost rehabilitation opportunities for inmates through various farming programs, including a successful sugar cane cutting scheme.
Currently, the Rakiraki Temporary Corrections Centre serves as a seasonal accommodation for inmates and officers from Suva and Naboro during the sugar cane harvesting season. These deployments cause logistical challenges and strain institutional operations.
Converting the temporary facility into a permanent Rehabilitation Centre would alleviate these challenges and provide continuous rehabilitation opportunities for inmates. FCS senior management, led by Commissioner Dr. Nakarawa, met with the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Yogesh Karan, to discuss the proposal. Karan endorsed the plan and expressed willingness to collaborate on a joint Cabinet Paper for the project.
This initiative is expected to positively affect the economy by supporting the sugar industry. The FCS Project Team will conduct a scoping exercise at the Rakiraki site. Upon completion, the scoping report will be submitted to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities for technical review. This report will accompany a joint Cabinet Paper for government approval.
Government approval of this project will offer numerous benefits to the FCS, the government, and the residents of Ra Province. It will enhance the local economy, create employment opportunities, and strengthen social stability. Additionally, it will significantly improve rehabilitation programs for inmates while supporting the sugar industry.
