Training during the festive season presents its challenges, as highlighted by Lavidi Brothers captain Sefanaia Vuli while gearing up for the upcoming McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s. Scheduled from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Lavidi is among the 16 teams competing in the men’s division.
Vuli admitted that many players missed training last week due to familial commitments and celebrations during Christmas and New Year. “This time of year makes it difficult to maintain a training schedule with family gatherings, feasting, and traditional kava drinking,” he explained. Despite these hurdles, Vuli expressed satisfaction that most of the team managed to attend training sessions at the Sigatoka sand dunes.
The former national sevens squad member is eager to regain his position on the national team. After a brief period with the Kaiviti Silktails, he returned to rugby union and is focusing on his fitness and consistency ahead of the Coral Coast 7s, recognized as one of the toughest tournaments in Fiji. “With our former captain George Bose now representing the national team, we aspire to follow in his footsteps and showcase our talents in Sigatoka,” Vuli added.
His ambition for the year is clear: to return to the national sevens squad. He firmly stated, “I’m trying my best to return to the national side, and I’m prepared if I’m called upon.” The Lavidi Brothers squad features national sevens team members Iosefo Namoce and Livai Ikanikoda, further strengthening their lineup.
Recently, the Lavidi Brothers achieved notable success as the runners-up at the 31st R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s held at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori, showcasing their potential as they head into the Coral Coast 7s.
In summary, while the festive season poses challenges for maintaining training schedules, the Lavidi Brothers are determined to showcase their skills and aspirations at the Coral Coast 7s. This event not only serves as an opportunity for the team to excel but also highlights the strength of local talent in Fiji’s rugby scene.
