Training during the festive season poses challenges for athletes, as highlighted by Sefanaia Vuli, captain of the Lavidi Brothers rugby team. As they prepare for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, which is set to take place from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Vuli noted the various distractions that come with the holiday period.
Many team members missed training sessions last week as they returned to their villages to celebrate Christmas and New Year. Vuli mentioned that family gatherings, celebrations, and traditional activities like drinking kava often interfere with consistent training. Despite these hurdles, the team has managed to stay committed, particularly during sessions at the Sigatoka sand dunes.
Vuli, a former member of the national sevens squad, is eager to return to the national side. He expressed hope that more players from his team would be recognized for their talent, inspired by former captain George Bose, who has secured a spot on the national team. Along with Vuli, national squad members Iosefo Namoce and Livai Ikanikoda contribute to the Lavidi Brothers lineup.
The Lavidi Brothers demonstrated their capabilities recently by finishing as the runners-up at the 31st R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. As they head into the Coral Coast 7s, the Lavidi Brothers aim to showcase their skills and increase their chances of all players being called to represent Fiji at the national level.
In conclusion, the dedication and passion displayed by the Lavidi Brothers, despite the challenges posed by the festive season, reflect their commitment to achieving success in the upcoming tournament. With their sights set on showcasing their talent, the team remains hopeful for a strong performance in Sigatoka.
