Ranjana Devi Pillay, a 42-year-old from Balata in Tavua, has recently made history in her family by becoming the first lawyer. Her journey into law began when her form teacher suggested pursuing this career path, serving as a pivotal moment of guidance.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Pillay described her childhood as a mix of beautiful memories and challenges. Despite coming from an average family and facing financial struggles, her parents prioritized education for their children. She shared fond recollections of family gatherings filled with music and her involvement in sports, such as netball and athletics.
Throughout her academic journey, Pillay faced various hurdles. However, she credited her mother’s unwavering support and encouragement as instrumental in her success. Her mother even took proactive steps by ensuring Pillay applied for law school and monitored her enrollment each semester. The road was challenging, particularly while juggling work and studies, but strong friendships helped her stay motivated.
Tragically, during her third year of law school, Pillay’s brother experienced a brain hemorrhage while in the United States. This difficult period forced her to balance her studies alone while her family rallied around her brother. Her lecturers were accommodating, enabling her to continue her education and meet her assessments remotely.
During her bar admission, surrounded by her mother, brother, sister-in-law, and a close family friend, Pillay experienced immense joy and pride. She expressed sorrow for her father’s absence, recalling how he treated all his children equally, irrespective of gender. Her family’s support was crucial in her achievement as the first lawyer, filling them with pride.
Currently, Pillay is employed as an investigator at the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission. She encourages aspiring law students to remain persistent, highlighting that law is an enriching field that requires dedication and a willingness to learn. Reading and seeking help when necessary are crucial for success in this career.
Pillay’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and the importance of family support. Her achievements not only serve as an inspiration to others from similar backgrounds but also shine a light on the potential that lies within supportive environments. This story exemplifies how challenges can be surmounted with determination and encouragement, fostering hope for those facing their own hurdles.
