A mother is seeking answers from her son’s employer after his tragic death at a job site in Suva. Anit Anitesh Ram, a resident of Vunivau and employee of Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), reportedly suffered a fatal shock while working on Tuesday.
His mother, Puspha Wati, received a call from EFL around 9:22 AM informing her that Ram had been taken to Oceania Hospital following the incident. The Ram family is mourning the loss of their only breadwinner.
“I quickly tried to arrange a flight from Labasa to Suva to check on Anit’s condition, but after an hour, I received a call from my relatives telling me that he had passed away,” Ms. Wati shared. She expressed frustration over her attempts to reach her son’s supervisor, which were unsuccessful, and noted that she received no communication from the employer.
She insisted that her son would have never acted irresponsibly at work and is demanding clarity from EFL. “Typically, EFL promptly sends out advisory messages about power outages—even on the day my son died, when there was a power disruption in Suva that ended a Parliament session early. Yet, they fail to inform families about the loss of their employees,” she stated.
An email seeking a response from EFL regarding the incident had not been answered by the time of reporting. Ms. Wati revealed that Ram joined EFL in November of last year and had sought a transfer to be closer to his family.
“My husband and I are in poor health, and recently Anit comforted us, assuring he would return soon,” the 45-year-old mother explained. She added that Ram celebrated his 26th birthday on August 11, and during their last conversation the day before his death, he expressed his excitement about playing in the Labasa Sanatan soccer tournament.
“We spent so many years raising him to ensure he could lead a good life and care for us in our old age, but now we feel like we have lost everything.”
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that Ram was found unresponsive and is believed to have died from electrocution. However, she stated that authorities are awaiting post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
