Tragic Weekend: Three Lives Lost in Wailoaloa and Tavua Accidents

Three individuals lost their lives in two distinct road accidents over the weekend in the western division. Two men were confirmed dead at the scene of a tragic incident in Wailoaloa, Nadi, while a 21-year-old man succumbed to injuries from another crash on King’s Road at Dravuni, Tavua, on Saturday.

It is reported that both incidents occurred when the drivers lost control of their vehicles while trying to overtake. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, stated that the identities of the two men who died in Nadi have not yet been confirmed.

“Both men died on the spot, based on the information we have gathered. They were drinking with their cousin along with five other youths at Wailoaloa Beach early yesterday morning,” SSP Divuana revealed. “We are still in the process of identifying them through their relatives, as we have their names but need to confirm their identities.”

SSP Divuana also noted that the deceased were related to the driver, who has since been released from Nadi Hospital and is now in custody at the Namaka Police Station. Three others involved in the accident were taken to Nadi Hospital for treatment.

In Tavua, the 21-year-old man was driving on King’s Road near Draunivi when the accident occurred on Saturday. He was transported to Tavua Hospital but unfortunately passed away later that afternoon. The four passengers with him were treated and later discharged. Speeding is believed to be a contributing factor in this incident.

“Speeding remains a significant concern. We are issuing citations to drivers daily for exceeding speed limits, despite ongoing warnings and advisories from both police and the Land Transport Authority,” SSP Divuana noted. “Traffic officers at checkpoints continually remind drivers, yet many still ignore these messages. The current road death toll stands at 31, a notable decrease compared to 57 for the same period last year. Together, we can prevent further increase in these statistics by acknowledging and assuming our responsibilities.”
