Tragic Violence Sparks Urgent Calls for Action in Fiji

Police are searching for a man suspected of causing the death of his partner. The woman died from injuries inflicted by the suspect, who had not been located as of last night.

The couple reportedly lived in a rented residence at the upscale Albert Lee Place, near Nailuva Road in Suva. The incident came to light when a family member informed another household member, leading to the filing of a police report.

Authorities stated that an investigation is ongoing and that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death.

Last night, the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection expressed its deep sorrow and outrage regarding the tragic event. The ministry called for swift justice for the victim and urged all members of society to take immediate action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We stand in solidarity with the victim’s family and everyone affected by this horrific violence,” the ministry said, highlighting that this incident follows closely on the heels of another case from April, where a woman met a similar fate.

The ministry noted the alarming prevalence of violence against women and girls in Fiji, citing that nearly two out of three women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.

“This must end. We encourage every individual, family, and community to unite in preventing violence against all women and girls. Each Fijian has a responsibility to ensure our homes, neighborhoods, and communities are safe and respectful for all women and girls,” they asserted.

Lynda Tabuya, the line minister, stated, “This loss is unacceptable and heartbreaking. To all women and girls, you are not alone. Help is available through the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, the National Domestic Violence Helpline (1560), and the Child Helpline (1325). We stand with you, and we will fight for justice for the victim. No woman should live in fear.”

The Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, launched in June 2023, serves as a critical component of Fiji’s strategy to address this crisis.
