Tragic Toll: 603 Lives Lost to Road Accidents in Fiji

A total of 603 individuals have tragically lost their lives in road accidents in Fiji, as reported by the Fiji Police Force’s Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana. This statistic covers the period from 2014 to the present and was disclosed during the closing ceremony of the National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival.

SSP Divuana emphasized the impact of these fatalities, stating, “The 603 victims left behind their families, their aspirations, and their lives were cut short due to accidents that were mostly avoidable. The causes of these accidents are often linked to poor decision-making and a blatant disregard for others’ right to safety on our roads.”

He pointed out that the data indicates a wide range of victims, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, highlighting the diverse group of people at risk of becoming victims of road accidents.

SSP Divuana stressed the importance of changing attitudes towards road safety, urging adults to set a positive example for children by adopting safer road practices.
