Tragic Toll: 603 Lives Lost in Fiji Road Accidents

A total of 603 individuals have tragically lost their lives in road accidents since 2014, according to data shared by the Fiji Police Force’s Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana. This information was revealed during the conclusion of National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival.

SSP Divuana emphasized the profound impact of these fatalities, stating, “The 603 victims left behind their families, their aspirations, their lives cut short, because of accidents which were in most cases avoidable.” He pointed out that the primary causes of these accidents stemmed from poor decision-making and a lack of respect for others’ right to safety on the roads.

The data indicates that victims of road accidents include drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, highlighting the wide range of individuals who are vulnerable to such tragedies. SSP Divuana stressed the importance of changing attitudes toward road safety, noting that adults have a responsibility to set a positive example for children by improving their own mindsets regarding road safety.
