A tragic incident has resulted in the first road fatality of 2025 in Savusavu, where a 46-year-old farmer from Vivili village was struck and killed by a vehicle on Naidi, Buca Bay Road early this morning. The accident occurred when the driver of a vehicle, reportedly losing control, drifted onto the side where the farmer was walking, colliding with him. The victim died at the scene.
Fiji Police Force’s Director of Traffic Control, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, expressed deep concern over the timing of this incident, particularly as the new school year begins tomorrow. He urged drivers to be mindful of the numerous students who will be using the roads, emphasizing, “We are calling on everyone to be cautious while on the road. If you are traveling in the bus, taxi, or even as a pedestrian on the road, please exercise safety at all times.”
The investigation into the incident is currently underway, and the driver involved is in police custody. This incident highlights the crucial need for increased awareness about road safety, especially during times when school is in session, when pedestrian traffic rises significantly.
Reflecting on previous incidents, it is worth noting that the national road death toll has shown a marked decrease this year, standing at 54 compared to 73 last year during the same period. This reduction indicates a positive trend in road safety measures, although recent unfortunate events serve as a reminder of the continued need for vigilance and compliance with traffic regulations.
As our communities prepare for a new school year, it is essential to foster a culture of safety—ensuring that both drivers and pedestrians remain attentive and aware, thereby further reducing the risk of road accidents.
