Tomasi Waimuka is mourning the loss of his son, Aporosa Momo, who tragically became a victim of a hit-and-run incident on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka early Saturday morning. Momo, 26, was discovered by a passerby who promptly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.
Mr. Waimuka, a resident of Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, recounted the heartbreaking events leading up to this tragedy. The family had just returned from a funeral on Friday, and Aporosa had mentioned he would be visiting a relative’s place later that night. Hours later, Mr. Waimuka was startled awake by a knock at the door, discovering that his son had been in a serious accident. He expressed his heart-wrenching desire to see his son alive, hoping for merely a minor injury, but instead was met with the painful reality of his son’s death.
Aporosa Momo leaves behind two young children, amplifying the tragedy of his loss. Mr. Waimuka fondly remembered his son as a generous individual, always willing to lend a hand in community activities, and as a player in a local rugby league team.
In a separate incident, SSP Mitieli Divuana announced that there was another accident on the same night, resulting in the death of 38-year-old Nadi businessman Ronesh Chand. Mr. Chand lost control of his vehicle on Barara Flat while traveling with three others and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while two passengers remain in stable condition.
SSP Divuana indicated that investigations into the traffic incidents are underway and reported that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 at the same time last year.
While these incidents are deeply tragic, they also serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety and community vigilance. Families and individuals are urged to take extra precautions while traveling, particularly during late hours. The community is coming together in support during this difficult time, proving that in the face of sorrow, unity and compassion are vital.
The overall sentiment here reflects the love and support shared among families and communities. Such tragedies underscore the need for greater awareness about road safety and the impact of reckless driving on families and communities.
