The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has urged all road users to prioritize vigilance and safety following the tragic death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi. The incident occurred when the boy was reportedly thrown out of a moving vehicle, which hit potholes, causing him to fall onto the road.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that this heartbreaking loss could have been avoided, highlighting the urgent need for strict adherence to road safety practices. He called upon drivers to be more attentive and to drive responsibly, especially in challenging conditions such as potholes.

“Safety starts with responsible driving,” Rokosawa stated, stressing that drivers bear a significant responsibility for the well-being of their passengers. To enhance safety, he advised drivers to reduce their speed when encountering uneven roads and to avoid overloading vehicles. Furthermore, he encouraged proper seating for all passengers in secure areas of the vehicle.

Rokosawa pointed out the importance of cautious decision-making on the road, noting that higher speeds lead to reduced control, especially on rough terrains. He emphasized that every driver must adhere to legal and safety standards, highlighting a collective need for a mindset change towards road safety. Reckless driving, he noted, must not be tolerated, regardless of the road type, whether it be a busy highway or a quiet residential area.

Additionally, the CEO reminded passengers that they also play a vital role in maintaining safety. They should refrain from promoting dangerous behaviors, such as riding in unsecured areas of the vehicle or distracting the driver. Achieving safety on the roads is a shared responsibility that requires commitment from both drivers and passengers.

In summary, the LTA’s message is a call to action for all road users to foster a culture of safety and responsibility. By working together, both drivers and passengers can help prevent tragedies and ensure safer roads for everyone. There is hope that such efforts will lead to a significant reduction in road accidents and promote a more conscientious approach to driving in the community.
