A tragic incident has occurred as a 13-year-old student has reportedly become the latest victim of a road fatality in the country. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana detailed that the young student was a passenger in a vehicle traveling with four others on Princess Road in Tacirua when a truck, allegedly driven by a 21-year-old man, crashed into them.

According to SSP Divuana, the truck driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle, swerving into the opposite lane and causing the collision. All occupants of the car were immediately taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where unfortunately, the young student was pronounced dead upon arrival.

On the same day, SSP Divuana reported two additional serious accidents. The first occurred on Mead Road where a driver reportedly lost control of their vehicle, colliding with a car operated by a 52-year-old man. The driver of the first vehicle was also rushed to the hospital and remains admitted. Later that evening, on Daniva Road, a 39-year-old man driving struck an 8-year-old student who allegedly crossed the road unexpectedly. The child is currently hospitalized.

In light of recent events and the adverse weather conditions noted by the Fiji Meteorological Office, SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of safety for drivers and pedestrians alike, urging everyone to take necessary precautions.

Despite these tragic occurrences, it’s worth noting that the national road death toll has decreased to 54 this year compared to 73 in the same period last year. This statistic reflects ongoing efforts to improve road safety and community awareness.

Overall, while the day’s events are sorrowful, they serve as a reminder of the critical need for vigilance and caution on the roads, particularly during challenging weather conditions. Let us remain hopeful that through awareness and proactive measures, we can reduce the number of such accidents in the future.
