A 12-year-old boy who was injured in a road accident in Navua last month has died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that the incident occurred on the evening of September 28, 2024, when the child was walking along the roadside near the Yarawa Settlement in Serua. He was reportedly struck by a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man who allegedly lost control of the car, leading to the accident in which both the boy and a seven-year-old child were seriously hurt.

The 12-year-old was admitted to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries yesterday. The second child remains hospitalized in serious condition.

SSP Divuana emphasized that the ongoing investigation serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of speeding. He stated, “Speeding kills. If not the driver or their passengers, it affects other road users. Some drivers blatantly disregard speed limits, and their behavior is both dangerous and selfish.”

Currently, the road death toll stands at 44, a decrease from 63 during the same period last year.
