A child who was involved in a road accident in Navua last month has died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The 12-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries on the evening of September 28, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle while walking near the Yarawa Settlement in Serua. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a 21-year-old man who allegedly lost control, leading to the incident, which also injured a seven-year-old child.
The young victim was admitted in critical condition and passed away yesterday, while the second injured child remains hospitalized and in serious condition. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, stated that investigations are ongoing and highlighted the tragic implications of speeding on the roads. He emphasized that speeding poses a danger not only to the driver and their passengers but also to other road users.
The current road death toll stands at 44, in contrast to 63 deaths recorded during the same period last year.
