A 12-year-old boy who was injured in a road accident in Navua last month has died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The incident occurred on the evening of September 28, 2024, when the boy was walking along the road near the Yarawa Settlement in Serua and was reportedly struck by a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man.
Authorities say the driver lost control of his vehicle, leading to the accident that also injured another child, a seven-year-old, who is currently in serious condition.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana emphasized that the ongoing investigation highlights the dangers of speeding on the roads. He noted, “Speeding kills, whether it affects the driver, their passengers, or other road users. Some drivers openly disregard speed limits, putting everyone in danger.”
Currently, the road death toll stands at 44, a decrease from 63 fatalities during the same period last year.
