The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has expressed a critical warning to parents to exercise increased vigilance over their children during the school break. This plea follows a tragic incident where a five-year-old girl from Naituvatuvatu Village in Wainibuka, Tailevu, was swept away by strong currents in the Waisomi River.
The young girl was attempting to cross the river with seven other children and her aunt, who is 32 years old, after a trip to gather edible lady fern. Sadly, her body was recovered the following day after hours of search efforts initiated by the village headman and local police officers. The recovery operation faced challenges, including darkness and adverse weather conditions, which necessitated a pause in the search until daylight.
ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of parental supervision during the holidays, advising parents to engage more with their children and to avoid large gatherings and festivities that could distract them from keeping a watchful eye.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers children face and the vital role of parental involvement in ensuring their safety. It’s essential for communities to come together and support each other during such tragic events while fostering an environment where children can enjoy their holiday safely.
In a more positive light, the call for parental responsibility highlights an opportunity for families to strengthen their bonds during the school break, emphasizing quality time spent together. By prioritizing safety and awareness, families can create a more secure environment for children to explore and enjoy their surroundings.
