Parents are being urged to be more vigilant and responsible regarding their children’s safety during the school break, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu. This plea comes in light of a tragic incident where a five-year-old girl from Naituvatuvatu Village in Wainibuka, Tailevu, was swept away by strong river currents.
The heartbreaking event occurred when the young girl attempted to cross the Waisomi River with seven other children and her aunt, who is 32 years old, after they had been gathering edible lady fern known as Ota. Tragically, her body was recovered the following morning after an extensive search operation was launched, which had to be suspended due to darkness and poor weather conditions. With the cooperation of the village headman, three police officers were able to assist in the search efforts.
ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of parental supervision during holidays, advising parents to spend quality time with their children and to avoid large gatherings or festivities that could distract them from ensuring their children’s safety.
This incident underscores a vital message on child safety, particularly during periods when kids are on break. It serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of nature and the need for constant supervision.
In light of this tragedy, it’s hopeful that communities will come together to prioritize child safety, fostering an environment where children can enjoy their holidays free from danger.
