Tragic Outcome: Child Succumbs to Injuries from Navua Road Accident

A child who was injured in a road accident in Navua last month has died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The incident occurred on September 28, 2024, when the 12-year-old victim was walking near the Yarawa Settlement in Serua and was struck by a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident in which the victim and another seven-year-old child were seriously hurt. The 12-year-old was admitted in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries yesterday. The seven-year-old remains hospitalized in serious condition.

SSP Divuana emphasized that the ongoing investigation serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of speeding. He stated, “Speeding kills; if not the driver or their passengers, other road users. Some drivers blatantly disregard speed limits, and their actions are dangerous and selfish.”

So far this year, the road death toll has reached 44, down from 63 during the same period last year.
