Yesterday morning, two tragic accidents occurred in Lautoka, resulting in fatalities and prompting concerns from local authorities. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that the first accident happened shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. According to initial reports, the victim lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara Flat toward Nadi, causing the car to veer off the road. He and three passengers were rushed to Lautoka Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, two of the passengers remain in stable condition, while the third was discharged.
The second accident, which is believed to be a hit and run, took place just after 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and was quickly taken to Lautoka Hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana stated that traffic investigators are currently working to gather details about the vehicle involved in this incident.
As a point of perspective, the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year. This statistic offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting that efforts to improve road safety may be having an impact, even as these recent tragedies remind us of the ongoing risks associated with driving. It’s essential for all road users to remain vigilant and prioritize safety to prevent future accidents.
Overall, while yesterday’s accidents were a grim reminder of road dangers, the commitment of local authorities to investigate and enhance traffic safety remains strong.
