A young man lost his life in a tragic accident in Lautoka on Saturday morning. Isei Tamanikalou, 21, hailing from Matanagata in Vatukoula, was looking forward to returning to Fiji National University for a degree in engineering.
The police reported that Tamanikalou was one of three passengers in a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man when it crashed on Kings Road in Naviyago, just outside Lautoka.
His grieving grandparents described him as a bright and compassionate individual who made a significant impact on everyone he encountered. His grandmother, Makereta Laulau, is struggling with the loss, recalling their last conversation a few hours before the incident.
“We had just come back from church, and he mentioned he was headed to Matanagata to see friends. He had many friends in the village and enjoyed spending time with them,” she said, reflecting on the last time she saw him.
“He was such a good boy; always shy and quiet, but with so much love to give,” his grandfather, Epitani Tabua, shared. “He was well-liked and always ready to help at home without asking for much.”
Tamanikalou had recently obtained a certificate in electrical engineering, and his family was excited about his future. “He was eager to go back to university and was determined to better his life. He was so focused on his goals,” Mr. Tabua added.
One of Tamanikalou’s closest relationships was with his uncle, Eloni Naidedede, who had adopted him as a child. “He referred to him as ‘dad’ due to their close bond,” Mr. Tabua said. “Isei was far too young; he had his entire life ahead of him, and it’s incredibly difficult to come to terms with his passing.”
The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
