The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to prioritize vigilance, responsibility, and caution following the tragic incident involving the death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi. The young boy reportedly fell from a moving vehicle after it hit potholes, which led to his being thrown onto the road.

In light of this heartbreaking loss, LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa stressed the importance of adhering to road safety principles. He emphasized that this type of accident could have been prevented with greater awareness and careful driving practices, particularly on roads with hazardous conditions like potholes.

Rokosawa noted that drivers bear a significant responsibility for the safety of their passengers and must remain vigilant when driving on uneven surfaces. He encouraged drivers to slow down and navigate these areas with caution to reduce potential risks. Ensuring that passengers are seated securely and avoiding overloading the vehicle were also highlighted as vital considerations for drivers.

Moreover, the LTA Chief Executive stressed the need for a cultural shift regarding road safety, promoting an understanding that reckless driving can lead to severe consequences. Both drivers and passengers must work together to maintain safety while on the road. For passengers, this means not only adhering to safety regulations but also avoiding behaviors that may distract the driver or encourage unsafe practices, like riding in hazardous areas of a vehicle.

In light of this tragedy, it is hopeful that the conversation around road safety will inspire lasting change, encouraging everyone to take personal responsibility in making roads safer for all. This incident serves as a reminder that each road user plays a critical role in fostering a culture of safety that can protect lives.
