The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to prioritize caution and responsibility following the tragic death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi, last Thursday. Reports indicate that the child was thrown from a moving vehicle that encountered potholes, leading to the unfortunate incident.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed that this loss of life was avoidable, emphasizing the importance of adherence to road safety principles. He stressed that drivers need to be particularly vigilant when navigating challenging road conditions, which includes reducing speed when faced with potholes or uneven surfaces.
“Safety starts with responsible driving,” Rokosawa remarked, pointing out that drivers are held accountable for the wellbeing of all passengers. He urged that vehicles should not be overloaded and that all passengers must be secured in safe areas of the vehicle.
He also highlighted that speeding reduces a driver’s control, especially on rough roads, reinforcing that every driver must comply with safety norms. “A collective commitment to road safety is necessary,” Rokosawa stated, urging a cultural shift where drivers recognize the potential life-changing impacts of their actions on the road.
Additionally, he reminded passengers of their role in maintaining safety. Passengers should avoid behaviors that endanger themselves or distract drivers, taking shared responsibility for safe travel.
While the circumstances surrounding this tragic event are deeply saddening, it serves as a crucial reminder of the essential role that both drivers and passengers play in enhancing road safety. By fostering a culture of responsibility and caution, we can strive to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure safer roads for everyone.
