A 21-year-old man, Isei Tamanikalou, tragically lost his life in an accident in Lautoka on Saturday morning. Hailing from Matanagata in Vatukoula, Tamanikalou was preparing to resume his studies in engineering at Fiji National University.
Authorities confirmed that he was one of three passengers in a vehicle that crashed on Kings Road in Naviyago, outside Lautoka, driven by a 30-year-old man. His grandparents, deeply affected by his passing, described him as a bright and promising young man who significantly impacted everyone he encountered.
His grandmother, Makereta Laulau, is struggling with the grief of losing him and recalls their final conversation just hours before the tragic incident. She mentioned they had returned from church, and he expressed plans to visit friends in Matanagata, where he enjoyed spending time due to his many friendships.
“What a good boy he was—shy and quiet yet filled with love,” his grandfather, Epitani Tabua, commented. He noted that Tamanikalou was well-liked in the community, always cheerful, and eager to help at home without asking for much in return.
Having recently obtained a certificate in electrical engineering, the family was excited about his future. “He was so eager to go back to university and was determined to create a better life for himself,” Mr. Tabua said.
Tamanikalou shared a close bond with his uncle, Eloni Naidedede, who adopted him. Mr. Tabua highlighted their unique relationship, saying Tamanikalou referred to him as “dad” due to their closeness.
“He was too young and had so much life ahead. It’s incredibly hard to accept that he’s no longer with us,” he added.
An investigation into the incident is still underway.
