A 21-year-old man lost his life in a tragic accident in Lautoka on Saturday morning. Isei Tamanikalou, originally from Matanagata in Vatukoula, had plans to return to Fiji National University to study engineering.
Authorities confirmed he was one of three passengers in a vehicle that collided along Kings Road in Naviyago, just outside Lautoka. His grandparents are deeply mourning his loss, describing Tamanikalou as a talented young man with a big heart who left a positive mark on everyone.
His grandmother, Makereta Laulau, struggles with the pain of losing him, recalling their last conversation hours before the incident. “We had just returned from church, and he mentioned he was going to Matanagata to see friends,” she shared. “He had numerous friends in the village and enjoyed spending time with them.”
That farewell proved to be their last. His grandfather, Epitani Tabua, remembered him as a shy but loving individual. “He was well-liked, always cheerful, and helpful around the house without asking for much,” he said.
Having recently finished a certificate in electrical engineering, the family was excited about Tamanikalou’s future. “He was eager to head back to university and motivated to build a better life for himself,” stated Mr. Tabua.
Isei shared a special bond with his uncle, Eloni Naidedede, who raised him. “He referred to him as ‘dad’ because of their close relationship. It’s incredibly difficult to grasp that he’s gone, especially at such a young age when he had his whole life ahead of him,” Mr. Tabua expressed.
An investigation by the police regarding the incident is currently underway.
