A 21-year-old man, Isei Tamanikalou, lost his life in a tragic accident in Lautoka on Saturday morning while pursuing a better future for himself and his family. Originally from Matanagata in Vatukoula, Tamanikalou had ambitions of returning to Fiji National University to study engineering.
According to police, Tamanikalou was one of three passengers in a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man that crashed along Kings Road in Naviyago, near Lautoka. His grandparents are still mourning his untimely death, recalling him as a bright individual with a kind heart who made a positive impact on everyone he encountered.
His grandmother, Makereta Laulau, reflected on their final interaction, which occurred just hours before the accident. After returning from church, he shared plans to visit friends in Matanagata. “He had so many friends in the village and loved spending time with them,” she said, expressing the heartbreak of their last goodbye.
His grandfather, Epitani Tabua, described Tamanikalou as a well-liked, cheerful young man who enjoyed helping around the house and rarely asked for anything in return. Having recently earned a certificate in electrical engineering, the family was looking forward to his future endeavors. “He was excited to return to university and was determined to create a better life for himself,” Mr. Tabua shared.
The special bond between Tamanikalou and his uncle, Eloni Naidedede, was also highlighted. Deemed a father figure, Naidedede provided guidance and support throughout Tamanikalou’s life.
“It’s hard to accept that he’s gone. He had so much potential and his whole life ahead of him,” Mr. Tabua lamented. An investigation into the accident is currently underway.
