The promising future of 11-year-old Roger Qoro came to a tragic end when he lost his life after being thrown from a moving vehicle on New Year’s Day. Known for his bright aspirations and talents, Roger’s death has left his family and community in deep sorrow.
The incident occurred when Roger was traveling with friends in the back of a carrier truck during a church picnic to Natadola. It was reported that the vehicle hit a pothole, causing him to fall onto the road. Despite being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Roger’s father, Roger Qoro Sr., expressed the profound heartbreak this loss has caused. He shared that his son had dreamed of becoming an aircraft engineer and aspiring to play rugby for the national team, visualizing a future where he would be celebrated on television. “He wanted all his medals hanging on the wall in our living room,” his father reminisced, highlighting Roger’s dedication to both academics and sports, where he earned accolades including a gold medal in the 4x100m and a silver in long jump events.
Throughout his schooling, Roger consistently ranked among the top students, and he was expected to be appointed as deputy head boy at Sabeto District School this year. “He worked so hard, always striving to be the best,” his father reflected.
The family described Roger as a devoted boy who led their family devotion and never missed a prayer or church service. Tragically, the day he passed, he had been full of energy, helping his father with yard work.
The accident was particularly shocking for his father, who was unaware of the unfolding tragedy while at work. The heartbreaking news was relayed to him through a series of phone calls filled with worry and ultimately despair. “I cried all night. How could this happen? Why him?” he questioned, remembering his son as their pride.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, expressed condolences, reiterating the importance of road safety amidst the festive season, highlighting that incidents still happen despite ongoing efforts to remind drivers of their responsibilities.
Roger’s body remains at Sigatoka Hospital as the community mourns the loss of a bright young talent.
While this is an immensely tragic situation, it also serves as a somber reminder of the safety precautions that need to be taken to protect our youth. The loving memories shared by his family illustrate the impact he had on those around him, leaving a legacy of aspiration and hard work.
The community can take solace in celebrating Roger’s dreams and achievements, as they remember him not only for how he lived, but also for the potential he held for the future.
