A young man who aspired to improve his life and that of his family tragically died in an accident in Lautoka on Saturday morning. Isei Tamanikalou, 21, originally from Matanagata in Vatukoula, had plans to return to Fiji National University to pursue a degree in engineering.

According to police, he was one of three passengers in a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man that crashed along Kings Road in Naviyago, just outside Lautoka. His grandparents, grappling with their grief, remembered Mr. Tamanikalou as a bright, promising individual with a big heart who made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

His grandmother, Makereta Laulau, recounted their last conversation, which took place just hours before the tragic event. They had just come home from church, and he mentioned his intention to visit friends in Matanagata, showing his love for socializing within the village.

“He was such a good boy. Always shy and quiet, but with so much love in his heart,” said his grandfather Epitani Tabua. “He was well-liked by everyone and loved helping around the house without asking for much in return.”

Mr. Tamanikalou had recently completed a certificate in electrical engineering, and his family was excited about his future. “He was eager to go back to university and conveyed how determined he was to create a better life for himself,” Mr. Tabua noted.

A particularly close relationship in Isei’s life was with his uncle, Eloni Naidedede, who had adopted him. “He always called him ‘dad’ because of their special bond,” Mr. Tabua said, expressing how difficult it is to come to terms with the loss of someone so young with a future ahead of him.

The police are currently investigating the incident.
