The dreams of 11-year-old Roger Qoro ended abruptly on New Year’s Day when he tragically lost his life after being thrown from the back of a moving vehicle. Known for his academic talents and athletic abilities, Roger’s untimely death has devastated his family.
The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, which occurred when Roger and other youth were traveling in a carrier truck along Natadola. The vehicle reportedly hit a pothole, causing him to fall from the truck onto the road. Despite being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Roger’s father, Roger Qoro Sr., expressed his heartbreak, stating that the start of the year was marked by profound loss. “My son had so many dreams,” he lamented, highlighting Roger’s aspirations to become an aircraft engineer and a rugby player for the national team. His father recalled how Roger frequently talked about his future, saying, “One day, you’ll see me on TV.”
Beyond sports, Roger was an exceptional student, consistently ranking in the top of his class from Year 1 through Year 6. He was also anticipated to be appointed as deputy head boy at Sabeto District School this year.
Described as hardworking and committed, Roger was not only a talented athlete, having won medals in sprinting and long jump, but he was also a dedicated family member who regularly led family devotion and was devoted to his faith. He was affectionately nicknamed the “Nadi Golden Boy” by his coaches, reflecting his potential and affection within the community.
This unfortunate incident happened during a church picnic trip to Natadola. Roger had joined friends in boarding the carrier truck on their return journey, which was transporting items from the picnic. His father, unaware of the tragedy at first, received the devastating news while he was at work. The sudden call to inform him of Roger’s fall left him in disbelief, and he was heartbroken to learn that his son had passed away.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, expressed sorrow over the incident and emphasized the ongoing need for road safety awareness, especially during festive seasons. He noted that despite police efforts to promote responsible driving, accidents can still occur due to negligence.
Roger’s body is currently at Sigatoka Hospital awaiting a post-mortem.
