Kaminieli Varo, a 32-year-old father of five, was laid to rest last Friday in his hometown of Navoci, Nadi. Tragically, Varo drowned earlier this month in the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco, New South Wales, Australia. His body was recovered a few days after the incident.

Varo, who had relocated to Australia in 2022 under the National Employment Centre (NEC) Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme, had a four-year work contract that was set to conclude next year. His wife, Mere Dawai, expressed that he was expected to return home in time for the Christmas celebrations with their family.

Friends and family gathered to honor his memory, expressing deep appreciation for the workmates and friends who participated in the search efforts leading to the recovery of his body. A colleague delivered a heartfelt eulogy, remembering Varo as a dedicated family man who worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones. He leaves behind his wife and five children.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of community support during difficult times. The solidarity displayed by Varo’s friends, family, and colleagues illustrates the impact of a strong community in helping those who are grieving. Despite the heartache, there is hope in the memories shared and the love that continues to surround Varo’s family.
