Tomasi Waimuka had a heartbreaking wish for his son, Aporosa Momo, to be alive after a tragic incident that occurred along Drasa Avenue in Lautoka early on Saturday morning. Momo, 26, is suspected to be a victim of a hit-and-run accident.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, Momo was discovered by a passerby and transported to Lautoka Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. Waimuka, who resides in Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, shared that they had just returned home from a funeral the night before. Momo had mentioned he was going to visit relatives shortly before the incident.
In a testament to his grief, Mr. Waimuka recounted the moment he received the devastating news from his nephews who informed him of the accident. He expressed his hope to see his son with only minor injuries instead of the tragic reality he faced upon arriving at the scene, where he found Momo’s body covered and beyond help. The family mourns deeply, particularly for Momo’s two young children left behind.
Reflecting on his son’s character, Waimuka mentioned how much Momo contributed to community events and how he was dedicated to his rugby league team in Lautoka. As investigations into the case continue, another accident reportedly claimed the life of Nadi businessman Ronesh Chand, 38. SSP Divuana reported that Chand lost control of his vehicle while driving, leading to a crash that resulted in his death, while two of his passengers remain in stable condition.
Despite the sorrow that envelops these families, it is hoped that increased awareness and road safety measures can prevent such tragic events in the future. Current statistics show a decrease in road fatalities this year, which reflects potential progress in creating safer roadways.
Through community support and a focus on safety, there is hope that such heartbreak can be mitigated moving forward.
