The Land Transport Authority (LTA) urges all road users to remain vigilant and responsible in light of the tragic death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi, who lost his life last Thursday. Reports indicate that the boy was ejected from a moving vehicle, allegedly due to the vehicle hitting potholes, resulting in him being thrown onto the road.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa deemed this heartbreaking incident preventable and underscored the importance of adhering to road safety measures. He emphasized that drivers must be acutely aware and practice responsible driving, especially when dealing with poor road conditions like potholes.
Rokosawa remarked, “Safety begins with responsible driving, and drivers bear a crucial responsibility for the well-being of all passengers. When traversing roads that are uneven, it’s vital for drivers to reduce their speed and proceed cautiously to mitigate potential hazards.” He called on drivers to avoid overloading their vehicles and to ensure that all passengers are seated securely.
He stressed the importance of decision-making on the road, urging drivers to prioritize passenger safety. Rokosawa warned that higher speeds translate to diminished control, especially on rough or unfamiliar terrain. He advocated for a nationwide shift in mindset towards road safety, highlighting that reckless driving poses dangers regardless of the setting.
Rokosawa also pointed out that passengers share the responsibility of ensuring safety on the road. He encouraged them to avoid promoting unsafe behavior, such as riding in unsafe positions or distracting the driver, thereby reinforcing the idea that safety is a collective responsibility.
This unfortunate event serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of road safety. By fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility among drivers and passengers alike, there is hope that similar tragedies can be prevented in the future.
