Tragic Incident: Elderly Woman’s Last Act Sparks Community Reflection

Police have reported the tragic death of a 79-year-old woman in Rakiraki, who is said to have set herself on fire at her residence on Monday. Neighbors discovered her collapsed on a burning pile of rubbish and quickly sought help, taking her to the hospital. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro stated that the cause of death was burns.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran highlighted a concerning trend, noting that there have been increasing reports of elderly individuals facing loneliness and depression, particularly as younger generations move away and leave their elders behind.

Kiran urged community networks and faith groups to reach out to older individuals in their communities who may lack essential support. She emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for engagement, stating that everyone can play a role in suicide prevention. “If we see someone who appears lonely, let us reach out and assist,” she said.

Earlier this year, Kiran disclosed that 16 elderly individuals had taken their own lives between January and June.
