Tomasi Waimuka’s heartache was palpable as he recounted the devastating loss of his son, Aporosa Momo, who was believed to be a victim of a hit-and-run incident on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka early Saturday morning. The tragic event left Momo, just 26 years old, dead upon arrival at Lautoka Hospital, following an alert from a passerby.
According to Senior Super-intendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, Momo was involved in a grievous accident after he left home, having spent the previous night at his family’s funeral. Mr. Waimuka described the sorrow of receiving the news in the dead of night from two nephews, initially hoping that his son would only sustain minor injuries. However, upon arriving at the scene, he was devastated to find his son’s body covered, a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability. Momo leaves behind two young children, deepening the family’s grief.
Mr. Waimuka expressed how much he would miss his son, emphasizing Momo’s generous spirit and commitment to the community, particularly in his involvement with the local rugby league team. Meanwhile, SSP Divuana confirmed that an investigation into the hit-and-run is underway.
In an unrelated incident, another tragic accident claimed the life of 38-year-old Ronesh Chand, a businessman from Nadi. Driving at Barara Flat, he lost control of his vehicle, which resulted in his death shortly after being transported to Lautoka Hospital. Two of his three passengers have been reported stable, while one has been discharged.
As the current road death toll stands at 50, a slight decline compared to last year’s figures of 71 during the same timeframe, these incidents highlight the continued urgency for road safety awareness and responsible driving practices.
Let us take a moment to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment with our loved ones. In the face of tragedy, communities often come together to support affected families, showcasing resilience and solidarity that can bring hope amid sorrow.
