Kaminieli Varo, a 32-year-old father of five, was laid to rest in his home village of Navoci, Nadi, last Friday. Tragically, he drowned at the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco in New South Wales, Australia, earlier this month, with his body discovered a few days later.
Varo had moved to Australia in 2022 as part of the National Employment Centre (NEC) Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme, where he held a four-year contract set to conclude next year. His wife, Mere Dawai, expressed heartbreak over his loss, sharing that he had planned to return home just in time for Christmas celebrations with the family.
In a touching ceremony, friends and family members came together to honor his memory. The family expressed immense gratitude to those who participated in the search for his body, highlighting the community support during this difficult time. A colleague delivered a moving eulogy, emphasizing Varo’s dedication to his family and hard work to provide for them.
He is mourned by his beloved wife and their five children, who will carry his memory forward as they navigate life without him.
This heartbreaking story underscores the importance of community, family, and the challenges faced by many in the Pacific seeking better opportunities abroad. As Varo’s family comes to terms with their loss, it’s a reminder of the fragility of life and the cherished moments spent with loved ones.
