Two tragic accidents occurred yesterday morning in the Western Division, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.

The first accident happened shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that while driving on Barara flat towards Nadi, he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. The victim, along with three passengers, was rushed to Lautoka Hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries, while two of the passengers are currently hospitalized in stable condition, and the third passenger has been discharged.

The second incident, suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and transported to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana confirmed that traffic investigators are actively gathering information regarding the suspected vehicle involved.

Additionally, another serious accident in Wailada, Lami resulted in a 22-year-old sustaining critical injuries after crashing into a parked truck’s trailer. The victim was conveyed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for treatment.

In light of these unfortunate incidents, it’s noteworthy that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease compared to 71 during the same period last year. This suggests a potential improvement in road safety measures, which offers a glimmer of hope in the ongoing battle against traffic-related fatalities. Authorities continue to stress the importance of safe driving practices and the need for vigilance on the roads.

Ongoing investigations into both accidents aim to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
