The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations in Fiji is conducting an investigation into the tragic drowning of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka earlier this month. The incident took place around 8:00 AM on November 4, while the tourist was swimming alone.

Initial inquiries indicate a need to evaluate whether the resort had appropriate safety measures in place to ensure guest safety during activities like swimming. This includes assessing their supervision levels, rescue protocols, and evacuation procedures. The National Occupational Health and Safety Services is working closely with local authorities to gather medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to aid in their investigation.

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized the importance of the resort management identifying all potential hazards and implementing effective control measures to prevent future incidents. He stated, “The hotel management must adequately identify all potential hazards and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future. The full report will be produced once the investigation is completed.”

The National Occupational Health and Safety Services will conclude its investigation and prepare a detailed report once all information has been gathered. They routinely inspect all workplaces, including resorts, to ensure compliance with safety regulations and address any violations through enforcement notices.

While the circumstances surrounding this incident are unfortunate, it presents an opportunity for resorts and similar establishments to reevaluate their safety protocols and improve measures to protect their guests. By addressing these issues proactively, the industry can work towards ensuring a safer environment for all visitors.

In summary, the investigation of the drowning at the Fiji Hideaway Resort reflects a commitment to safety standards in the tourism sector and highlights the need for ongoing vigilance to protect both visitors and local communities.
