The tragic drowning of a Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka on November 4 has prompted concerns regarding Occupational Health and Safety standards. Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, confirmed that the tourist was swimming alone at the time of the accident.
The National Occupational Health and Safety Service (NOHSS) is conducting an investigation into the incident to determine if the resort had adequate systems and procedures in place to ensure guest safety during recreational activities. This inquiry will assess the level of supervision provided for such activities and the effectiveness of rescue and evacuation protocols for both guests and staff in emergency situations.
Minister Singh noted that the NOHSS is collaborating with local authorities to secure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to deepen the investigation. He emphasized the importance of the hotel management in identifying potential hazards and developing appropriate control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. A comprehensive report will be provided once the investigation concludes.
This unfortunate event highlights the necessity for continuous improvement in safety protocols in the hospitality industry, ensuring that guests can enjoy their stays with peace of mind. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that resorts will take proactive steps in enhancing their safety measures to protect all visitors, ultimately leading to a safer environment for everyone involved.
