Kaminieli Varo, a 32-year-old father of five, was laid to rest in his hometown of Navoci, Nadi, last Friday. Tragically, he drowned at the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco, New South Wales, earlier this month, with his body discovered a few days later.
Varo moved to Australia in 2022 through the National Employment Centre (NEC) Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme to fulfill a four-year work contract, which he was set to complete next year. His wife, Mere Dawai, shared that he was expected to return home in time for Christmas, allowing him to spend the holiday with his family.
During a heartfelt memorial service, friends and family gathered to pay their respects and honor Varo’s memory. They expressed deep gratitude to his coworkers and friends who participated in the search effort that led to the recovery of his body. One of Varo’s coworkers delivered an emotional eulogy, highlighting him as a dedicated family man who worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones.
Kaminieli Varo is survived by his wife and their five children, leaving behind lasting memories of love and dedication.
This devastating loss serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones. It also underscores the strength of community in times of tragedy, as seen by the support and solidarity shown by those who rallied together to honor Varo’s life.
