The Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations in Fiji is currently investigating the tragic drowning of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka that occurred earlier this month. The incident took place on November 4 at approximately 8:00 am while the tourist was swimming alone.
Preliminary inquiries indicate a need to evaluate the resort’s safety protocols and emergency procedures for guest activities, such as supervision, rescue, and evacuation measures. The National Occupational Health and Safety Services is working closely with local authorities to secure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to support the ongoing investigation.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has underlined the importance of the resort taking responsibility in identifying potential risks and establishing effective control measures to avert future occurrences. Singh stated, “The hotel management must adequately identify all potential hazards and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future. The full report will be produced once the investigation is completed.”
As part of its focus on workplace safety, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services performs regular inspections of various workplaces, including resorts, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and issuing enforcement notices for any violations found.
This investigation serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of safety measures in hospitality settings, particularly for establishments that cater to tourists. The hope is that through thorough investigations and enforcement of safety protocols, such incidents can be minimized, allowing guests to enjoy their experiences in a secure environment.
In summary, while the incident is unfortunate, the proactive steps being taken by the Ministry and resort management aim to foster a safer atmosphere for future visitors.
