The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS), part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is investigating the tragic drowning of a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka.

The incident involved a 50-year-old Japanese tourist who drowned while swimming alone on November 4, 2024, around 8:00 am. Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event, noting that preliminary findings indicate the guest was swimming without supervision.

NOHSS is conducting a thorough investigation to assess the adequacy of safety measures and protocols in place at the resort, including the level of supervision for aquatic activities, as well as the establishment of rescue and evacuation procedures for guests and staff in emergency situations. The National OHS Service is collaborating with authorities, including the Fiji Police Force, to gather medical and autopsy reports that will aid in their inquiry.

Singh outlined the responsibility of the hotel management to identify any potential hazards and implement control strategies to avoid similar incidents in the future. A comprehensive report will be submitted once the investigation wraps up.

The NOHSS regularly inspects workplaces across Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with established safety standards. They also issue notices to enforce compliance and prompt corrective actions when necessary.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols in tourist accommodations, and the proactive measures being taken by the authorities demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding visitors and preventing future tragedies.

In summary, the ongoing investigation highlights the need for heightened safety measures in the hospitality sector, which ultimately aims to protect tourists and create a secure and enjoyable vacation experience.
