A tragic incident has occurred, with a one-year-old child becoming the latest victim of drowning in the country. According to authorities, the child, from Galoa village, was discovered floating near the shoreline on the afternoon of October 29th. Despite attempts to revive the young boy, sadly, they were unsuccessful.
The child was reportedly with an older sibling when he wandered away into the sea, leading to this heartbreaking event. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly focusing on possible negligence.
In light of this tragedy, the Fiji Police Force is reminding parents and caregivers of the critical importance of closely supervising young children at all times to prevent such accidents and unnecessary loss of life.
So far this year, the drowning death toll has reached 46, slightly lower than the 47 recorded during the same period last year.
It’s essential to recognize that while tragic events like these occur, they serve as vital reminders for communities to reinforce water safety practices and ensure that children are always within sight while near water. By educating families and promoting vigilance, we can work together to reduce the risk of such devastating incidents in the future.
