A tragic incident occurred yesterday when the body of a 5-year-old girl was recovered from the Waisomo River after being swept away by strong currents. The young girl was crossing the river with her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children while returning from gathering edible lady fern when the accident occurred.
Local authorities were notified of the incident by the village chief, known as the Turaga ni koro, from Naituvatuvavatu. The girl’s body has been transported to Korovou Hospital, where it will be held until a post-mortem examination can be conducted.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise from natural bodies of water, particularly during adverse weather conditions. It emphasizes the importance of ensuring safety measures are in place when children are involved in activities near rivers and other waterways. Our thoughts are with the family and community during this difficult time, and we hope they find comfort and support amidst their grief.
